How Indie Games Are Made: Inside Our Game Development Process

Introduction: What Is Indie Game Development?

Indie game development is the process of creating video games without the backing of a major publisher. At Pencil, we develop original, video games that focus on immersive gameplay, engaging narratives, and artistic storytelling.

Whether you’re an aspiring developer or a curious gamer, this post breaks down what goes into producing an indie game, from concept to code.

Game Development Starts With an Idea

Every game starts with a vision, a core mechanic, world, or story that inspires everything else. If you are interested in creating your own game, the best place to start is with wherever you are most curious. Dive right in!

Our current project, Lore of Terra TD, is a tower defense built in Unity. If you’re wondering how to make a video game, it begins here, by choosing, learning and working with a game engine. There will be lots of coding and strategic challenges along the way, designing gameplay loops, mechanics, and player progression systems that are both fun and re-playable. There is going to be a lot to learn, and there are a lot of resources out there to support your journey. Let the gap in knowledge drive your curiosity.

Designing the Visuals and User Experience

Game design isn’t just coding , it’s visual storytelling, animation, and user interface (UI) design. Artists and developers collaborate to ensure every menu, interaction, and environment element feels intentional and polished.

Even at the prototype stage, we’re building with player experience in mind. We have tested UI responsiveness, character feedback, and gameplay progression to improve the game with actual feedback.
